BSNL WINGS - a VOIP based phone service launched

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has launched BSNL WINGS a VOIP based service. In WINGS, there is no SIM or cable wiring as is a VOIP service through an app. The WINGS service offers unlimited free audio/video calling for one year. The service can be activated with a one-time fee of Rs. 1,099 (Rs 1,297 with GST).

(The service is being launched in phases and may not be available in all the places)
Calls can be made using any data connection such as wired broadband, Wi-Fi, 3G or 4G network of any any operator. WINGS can also be used over Internet Leased Lines. WINGS also supports video calls, but is restricted between WINGS. The facility can be used anywhere within the country and the app automatically uses the existing address book in the phone.
Unlike other app-based VOIP services such as WhatsApp and Telegram calls, the WINGS app can make calls to any phone number - free of cost. As there is no physical SIM, the number can be used as the second number in phones without provision for second SIM. It can even be a third number in dual-SIM phones.
One more advantage is that the app can be installed in devices like tablets that don’t have provision for SIM cards. The device has to connect to a data network for the calls to work. Your laptop could become a phone with a BSNL number. The only condition is that it must be connected the internet.
There are other ways we can use WINGS. We can install the app on multiple mobiles. If one mobile runs out of battery or loses network, we can activate the app in the other mobile or device and continue to use it with the same number. Unlike SIM based mobiles, there is no need to swap SIMs.

How to get BSNL WINGS

Register at https://sancharaadhaar.bsnl.co.in/Wings/Login.do. Once you register and make the payment, you will get a 16-digit registration PIN in your registered email. Ensure that you give your mobile number too (can be of any operator) as you will get registration and other SMS in your number. There is an Aadhaar-based authentication you would have to go through in the process.

10 digit number of your choice

You will also be allowed to choose a 10-digit WINGS number from a list. What makes it more interesting is that you can search for a favourite number or a number with your favourite series. You will then have to log in to http://ngn.bsnl.co.in/index.php?r=user%2Fsecurity%2Flogin and activate the connection.
Once the connection is activated, you have to download the Grandstream Wave VOIP app and configure it. We can also use other apps like Zopier or Linphone. Zopier and Linphone are also available for computers. Once it is done, you will be able to use the app to make and receive calls. You can make video calls too, but for this, the other user must also have WINGS connection.
While configuring the app, just ensure that you use the same password you gave while registering for the service. BSNL also provides instruction to configure the app once you register.
